A Day Out at RHS Harlow Carr Gardens

RHS Harlow Carr is one of those places that just works for a proper day out. Whether I’m heading there with Izzy, meeting up with grandparents, or squeezing in a peaceful wander on my own, it somehow manages to keep everyone happy, which isn’t always easy!
It’s definitely not the cheapest attraction in Harrogate, but it is one of the most wholesome and easy-going family days out you can have. For years now I’ve opted for an annual membership, and honestly, if you live locally it’s the best value way to enjoy the gardens. Being able to pop in for an hour, come back in a different season, or stop by just for a play and a cuppa makes it feel totally worth it.
One of the things I love most is how family-friendly it is without feeling like it’s just for kids. There are plenty of play areas dotted around the gardens, many tucked into the wooded sections, which is perfect in the warmer months when you’re grateful for a bit of shade. That said, Harlow Carr is a brilliant all-year-round spot, just be prepared with wellies if it’s been raining, as it can get a little muddy in places (part of the fun, right?).
Facilities are well thought out too. You’ll find toilets near the main entrance and again by the Little Betty’s coffee shop. Most of the paths are pushchair friendly, although a few can be a bit bumpy, so it’s worth bearing that in mind if you’re navigating nap time on wheels.
And then there’s Betty’s… because of course there is. The main Betty’s Tea Rooms has both a café and a shop selling takeaway drinks, savoury bits and sweet treats. Inside the gardens there’s also a smaller Betty’s with loads of outdoor seating, a shorter menu and ice creams, ideal for a mid-walk pit stop. Little tip from me: don’t turn your nose up at the brown bread ice cream… it’s surprisingly good and definitely worth a try 🍦
During school holidays, RHS Harlow Carr really comes into its own. There are always activities and trails designed to get kids exploring and learning without it feeling like hard work. Easter reliably brings an egg hunt with a trail winding through the gardens, and this
It’s also worth keeping an eye out around Christmas, as 'Glow' their festive light trail is hugely popular and sells out every year, for very good reason. It’s one of those festive events that feels magical without being overwhelming.
All in all, RHS Harlow Carr is one of those places I keep coming back to, season after season. It’s calm, interesting, family-friendly and always changing with the seasons which means it never really gets old.
